Every morning, the same routine. Coat your lashes once. Wait. Coat them again. Try not to blink too soon. Then spend the evening carefully removing it all without pulling half your lashes out in the process.
If your natural lashes are light, fine, or practically invisible without mascara, you know this drill already. It's not that mascara is difficult. It just gets old doing it every single day.
Eyelash tinting at Aesthete Beauty in Dundee takes about 15 minutes. A semi-permanent dye darkens your lashes from root to tip, so they're visible the moment you wake up. No smudging on your pillow. No panda eyes after a swim. No mascara wand rattling around your handbag.
We offer two options. A classic eyelash tint from £15 and a hybrid dye from £18 that penetrates deeper into each lash and holds its colour longer. Both require a patch test 48 hours beforehand.
Radina has been tinting lashes at our Bell Street salon for years. She'll match the shade to your colouring, protect the skin around your eyes, and have you back out the door before your parking runs out.
Radina is really lovely and welcoming, and so skilled in many different services. I have had lash lift and eyebrows, and gel nail infills for a few months, and have been so pleased with results every single time. Highly recommend.
Eyelash tinting applies semi-permanent dye to your natural lashes. Think of it like a hair colour appointment, but just for your eyelashes. The dye coats each lash individually, turning them darker and easier to see. No extensions. No adhesive. No daily product.
The process is simple. Your therapist cleans your lashes to remove any traces of makeup or oil. She applies protective pads beneath your lower lashes and barrier cream around the eye area to stop dye reaching your skin. Then she mixes the tint fresh and brushes it along each lash carefully.
You keep your eyes closed for about 10 minutes while the dye develops. That's it. She removes the dye, cleans the area, and you open your eyes.
The result? Lashes that look like you're wearing a perfect coat of mascara. Except you're not wearing anything at all. The colour holds through showers, swimming, the gym, crying at films, and rubbing your eyes when you're tired.
Most clients find their tint lasts between four and six weeks. It fades gradually as your natural lash cycle sheds the tinted hairs and new ones grow through. A monthly top-up keeps them looking fresh.
Professional-grade dyes used in salons are formulated specifically for the delicate eye area. They're different from the hair dyes you'd use on your head. That's why a patch test 48 hours before your appointment is a strict requirement. Every time.
DIY kits exist. Refectocil and Julienne get recommended constantly on Mumsnet and beauty forums, and they do work. But there's a reason most salons won't sell you a DIY eye dye kit. The peroxide activator can burn if it gets into your eyes. Getting even coverage on both eyes when one hand is working blind is tricky at best. And the colour choices in a shop kit are limited to about four shades. Professional tinting gives you precise application on every lash, both upper and lower, with a colour matched to your natural colouring. Fifteen minutes, both eyes, no risk, no mess.
Aesthete Beauty offers two eyelash tinting options. Both darken and define your lashes. The difference is how the dye works and how long the results last.
Classic Eyelash Tint (£15)
Traditional semi-permanent tint. It coats the outside surface of each lash hair, depositing colour on the outer layer. Noticeably darker, more visible lashes that hold for around three to four weeks before fading as your natural lash cycle turns over.
Works well if you're topping up regularly or want a lighter, softer result. Most popular starting point for first-timers.
Hybrid Eyelash Dye (£18)
Newer formula. Ammonia-free gel that penetrates into the hair shaft rather than sitting on the surface. Because the colour goes deeper into each lash, you get a richer, more intense result that holds for up to six or seven weeks.
Hybrid dye also briefly stains the skin at your lash line for the first day or two. Gives a subtle eyeliner effect that fades naturally, leaving just the darker lashes behind.
Which Should You Choose?
For most clients, the hybrid dye is worth the extra £3. Darker result. Fades more gracefully. Longer between appointments. If you're booking every four weeks anyway and prefer a softer look, the classic tint does the job perfectly well.
Radina can advise which option suits your colouring and lash type when you come in for your patch test.
Tinted lashes at Aesthete Beauty, Dundee
Not everyone's lashes are the same. Eyelash tinting works differently depending on what you're starting with.
Light, Blonde, or Fair Lashes
This is where tinting makes the biggest difference. If your lashes are so light they practically disappear, a single appointment can change how your face looks in the mirror. Suddenly there's definition around your eyes that you've only ever had with mascara on. Clients with fair colouring regularly tell us it's the one treatment they'd never give up.
Red Hair and Fair Lashes
Redheads often have blonde or ginger lashes that vanish without product. Tinting gives you that frame around your eyes without fighting your natural colouring. A dark brown or blue-black shade works brilliantly with red hair and lighter skin tones.
Already Dark Lashes
You might wonder whether tinting adds anything. It does. Even dark lashes tend to be lighter at the tips. A blue-black tint evens out the colour along the full length of each lash, making them look thicker and more uniform. Your eye colour pops more when the frame around it is consistent.
Contact Lens Wearers
No problem at all. Remove your lenses before the appointment and pop them back in afterwards. Your eyes stay closed the entire time, so there's nothing to irritate.
Swimmers, Gym-Goers, Active Lifestyles
If you're in the pool three times a week or sweating through spin class, mascara is a losing battle. It runs. It smudges. It flakes. Tinted lashes don't do any of that. Same colour at 6am as after an evening swim.
It depends on what your tips look like. A lot of people with dark lashes still have lighter or transparent tips, especially on the lower lash line. Tinting evens out the colour from root to tip so every lash looks fully defined. If your lashes are genuinely dark all the way through, tinting won't make a dramatic difference. Radina will take a look and tell you honestly whether it's worth booking.
Your eyelash tinting appointment at Aesthete Beauty takes about 15 minutes. Here's what happens.
Before Your Appointment
You'll need a patch test 48 hours before your session. This applies every time. Not just your first visit. Pop into the salon or book a quick patch test appointment online. Radina applies a small amount of dye to the inside of your forearm, and you wait 48 hours to check for any reaction. No reaction means you're good to go.
Arrive with clean lashes if you can. No mascara, no eye cream, no oily products around the eyes. Forgot? Don't worry. We'll clean them for you. Just adds a minute or two.
During the Treatment
You lie back with your eyes closed the entire time. Protective shields go beneath your lower lashes. Barrier cream goes around the skin near your eyes. Radina mixes the dye fresh, applies it along each lash with a fine brush, and you relax for about 10 minutes while the colour develops.
Some clients feel a mild warmth or slight tingling. Normal. If anything feels uncomfortable, say so straight away and the dye comes off immediately.
After the Treatment
Dye comes off, area gets cleaned, eyes open. Whole thing, 15 minutes. You can go straight back to work, straight to the shops, wherever you need to be. No recovery time. No visible redness in most cases.
Your lashes look their darkest in the first few days, then settle into a natural-looking shade that lasts for weeks.
The tinting process uses professional-grade dye applied directly around your eyes, so hygiene matters more here than almost anywhere else. Fresh disposable applicators, micro brushes, protective pads, and barrier cream are all single-use. All reusable tools cleaned and sterilised between appointments, Radina in gloves throughout. The dye formulations are stored and mixed according to manufacturer guidelines. Nothing gets reused between clients.
All tools and equipment are thoroughly cleaned and hygienically prepared between every client. Fresh towels, sanitised surfaces, and a clean workspace are standard for every appointment.
If it's your first visit, you'll get a digital consultation form by email before the appointment. It covers your health and any concerns. Returning clients don't need to fill it in again unless something has changed.
Eyelash tinting aftercare is simple. The first 24 to 48 hours matter most.
The First 24 Hours
Keep your lashes dry. Avoid splashing water around your eyes, skip pointing the shower at your face, and don't go swimming. The dye is still setting. Water during this window pulls colour out before it locks in properly.
No eye makeup for 24 hours. No mascara, eyeliner, or eyeshadow. Give the dye a full day to settle.
Ongoing Care
Ditch oil-based makeup removers. Oil breaks down the dye faster than anything else. Micellar water or a gentle water-based cleanser works perfectly for removing eye makeup going forward.
If you use a lash growth serum, keep using it. Healthier lashes hold colour better and grow through looking thicker.
Don't rub your eyes aggressively when washing your face. Pat dry rather than scrubbing with a towel. Small habit. Big difference.
How Long Will It Last?
Classic tint: three to four weeks. Hybrid dye: up to six or seven weeks. The colour doesn't vanish overnight. It fades gradually as your lash growth cycle replaces tinted hairs with new, untinted ones growing through. Most clients book a top-up every four to six weeks to keep the colour consistent.
The most popular lash combination at Aesthete Beauty. An eyelash lift curls your lashes upward. The tint or hybrid dye darkens them. Together, you get the look of curled, mascara-coated lashes without touching a single product.
Here's why the combination works. A lash lift on its own curls your lashes, but if they're light or fair, the curl is hard to see from a normal distance. Adding a tint makes the lifted lashes actually visible. And a tint on its own darkens your lashes, but if they're straight or pointing downward, the colour hides behind your eyelid. The lift brings them into view.
Each treatment solves half the problem. Together they solve the whole thing.
Eyelash Lift with Tint from £55 (50 minutes). Eyelash Lift with Hybrid Dye from £55 (50 minutes).
The combo saves you a second appointment. Tinting happens during the lift process, so it doesn't add any extra time to the treatment.
If you've never had either treatment, the combo is a brilliant place to start. You'll see the full potential of your natural lashes in one sitting. Clients who try the combo for the first time almost always rebook it. Every time.
Radina applies the lift first, then the tint immediately after while your lashes are still on the silicone shield. Gives the most even colour and the cleanest result.

What Does That Actually Cost Per Week?
A hybrid dye at £18 lasting six weeks comes to £3 per week. Three quid. A decent mascara costs £8 to £15 and runs out in roughly the same time, but you're still applying it every morning and scrubbing it off every night. Factor in makeup remover, cotton pads, and five minutes twice a day, and tinting looks like the smarter option by a distance.

A professional treatment that applies semi-permanent dye to your natural eyelashes, making them darker and more defined without mascara. The dye is made specifically for lashes, not regular hair colour. Lasts 4 to 6 weeks.
A classic tint lasts three to four weeks. Hybrid dye lasts up to six or seven weeks. The colour fades gradually as your natural lash growth cycle replaces tinted hairs with new ones.
Yes, when performed by a qualified therapist using products made specifically for lashes rather than regular hair dye. A patch test 48 hours before every appointment checks for any sensitivity or allergic reaction.
Classic tint coats the outside of each lash hair and lasts 3 to 4 weeks. Hybrid dye is an ammonia-free gel that penetrates into the hair shaft for a deeper, longer-lasting result of up to 6 to 7 weeks. Hybrid dye costs £18 compared to £15 for classic tint at Aesthete Beauty.
Yes. A patch test is required 48 hours before every tinting appointment, not just your first one. Sensitivities can develop over time, so testing before each session protects you.
Remove your contact lenses before the treatment and put them back in afterwards. Your eyes stay closed throughout the procedure, so there's no risk of irritation.
About 15 minutes for a standalone tint or hybrid dye. If you're combining it with an eyelash lift, the full appointment is about 50 minutes.
No. Professional eyelash dyes are gentle on fine lash hairs. Daily mascara application and removal actually causes more mechanical damage to your lashes over time than periodic tinting does.
You can, but most clients find they don't need to. That's the whole point. If you want extra volume for a night out, mascara goes on over tinted lashes just fine. Just wait 24 hours after your appointment before applying any eye makeup.
It's one of the best treatments for fair lashes. Clients with light colouring often describe it as the single most worthwhile beauty treatment they've tried. The difference between invisible lashes and defined, dark ones is striking.
Wait 24 to 48 hours after your appointment before swimming. After that initial window, your tinted lashes are completely waterproof. Chlorine, salt water, and sweat won't affect the colour.
If you want a subtle, natural darkening and you're happy to top up every three to four weeks, the classic tint at £15 is perfect. If you want a darker, longer-lasting result, the hybrid dye at £18 is worth the small upgrade. Radina can advise based on your lash colour and type.
At Aesthete Beauty, eyelash tinting starts from £15 for a classic tint and £18 for hybrid dye. Combo treatments with a lash lift are £55 (with tint) or £55 (with hybrid dye). Call 01382 217888 to book.
Every three to four weeks for classic tint. Every five to six weeks for hybrid dye. Your natural lash growth cycle replaces treated lashes with untreated ones gradually, so the colour fades as old lashes fall out and new ones grow in. Most clients sync their tinting with another appointment like a brow treatment or a lash lift to save a separate trip.
In one sense, yes. You're not pulling at your lashes every morning applying mascara and every evening removing it. That daily tugging causes lash breakage over time, especially with waterproof formulas that need oil-based removers or cotton pads pressed against your lash line. Tinting gives you the colour without the daily mechanical stress. The dye itself does coat the lash hair, but it's a one-off application every few weeks rather than twice-daily contact.
