That shadow above your lip. You see it every time you look in the mirror. You've tried bleaching it and it just made the hair lighter but still visible. You've tried shaving and within a day the stubble was back, rougher than before. You've tried those at-home wax strips and they didn't grip properly, left half the hair behind, and your skin went red for the rest of the day. You've tried tweezing individual hairs but there are too many and it takes forever.
Upper lip hair is one of those things that bothers you more than anyone else probably notices, but you notice it every single day. You want it gone properly. Removed from the root so it stays gone for weeks, not hours.
Professional upper lip waxing at Aesthete Beauty uses Hive professional wax formulated specifically for sensitive facial skin. The treatment takes minutes, the hair is removed from the root in one clean strip, and the results last 3 to 6 weeks. No stubble, no shadow, no rough regrowth. At Aesthete Beauty in Dundee, upper lip waxing is carried out by Radina Ignatova, a qualified beauty professional with over 11 years of experience. Upper Lip Waxing from £14. Lip and Chin combo £25. Book online any time or call us on 01382 217888.
I regularly visit Aesthete Beauty for a range of treatments and am never disappointed. Radina is highly skilled and passionate about what she does. The salon is always immaculate. I would not go anywhere else.
The wax you buy in Boots is not the same as the wax used in a professional salon. The difference matters, especially on your face.
Hive professional wax grips hair, not skin. Professional wax formulations are designed to adhere to the hair shaft while minimising grip on the skin surface. This means the hair comes out but your skin isn't being pulled, torn, or stripped along with it. Cheaper waxes grip everything, which is why they cause more redness, irritation, and sometimes bruising on sensitive facial skin.
Temperature control. Radina heats the wax to the correct temperature for facial skin. Too hot and it burns. Too cool and it doesn't grip. Professional application means the wax is always at the right temperature, every time. At-home kits give you a microwave and a prayer.
Direction and speed matter. Wax needs to be applied in the direction of hair growth and removed against it, quickly and at the right angle. Get any of these wrong and you break the hair at the surface instead of pulling it from the root, which means faster regrowth and potential ingrown hairs. Radina's technique is practised and consistent. She does this every day.
Less redness, faster recovery. Because professional wax is better formulated and applied correctly, the skin reaction is typically much less than with at-home waxing. Most clients have minimal redness that settles within an hour or two.
Fantastic salon and very happy with the service.
Both methods remove hair from the root and give results lasting 3 to 6 weeks. The choice depends on your skin type and preference.
Waxing removes multiple hairs at once in a strip. It's fast, effective, and gives a clean result. It works well for most skin types and is particularly efficient when combined with chin waxing in the same appointment.
Threading uses no product on your skin at all. Just a cotton thread. It's the better option if your skin is very sensitive and reacts to any product, even professional wax. Threading is also more precise for shaping specific areas.
Aesthete Beauty offers both. If you've always had waxing and it works for you, stick with it. If your skin reacts to wax and you've been putting up with the redness because you didn't know there was an alternative, try threading. Radina can advise based on your skin.
Upper lip waxing is the right treatment if any of these sound familiar:
If your skin is very sensitive and reacts to wax with persistent redness or breakouts, facial threading may be a better option for you. Radina offers both and can recommend the right method.
If you're using retinol, tretinoin, or any prescription retinoid on your face, don't book a wax without checking first. Retinoids thin the skin by increasing cell turnover. Waxing on retinoid-thinned skin can lift the surface layer off with the hair, leaving a raw, painful area that takes days to heal. Stop using retinol on the upper lip area for at least five to seven days before your wax appointment. If you're on oral Accutane (isotretinoin), you can't wax at all while taking it and for some time after finishing the course. Mention it on your digital consultation form or when you book.
Upper lip waxing aftercare is straightforward but worth following, especially in the first 24 hours.
Avoid touching the area. Your skin has just had hair pulled from the follicle. Keep your hands away from the area and don't rub it.
No makeup for a few hours. Let the skin settle before applying foundation, concealer, or powder over the waxed area. Putting product on freshly waxed skin can clog the open follicles and cause spots.
Avoid heat. No hot showers directly on your face, no saunas, no steam rooms for 24 hours. Heat opens pores and can increase irritation on freshly waxed skin.
Wear SPF. Freshly waxed skin is more sensitive to UV. If you're going outside, apply SPF30 or higher over the area.
No exfoliation. Skip retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and any exfoliating products for 48 hours. These can irritate freshly waxed skin.
After the first 24 to 48 hours, carry on as normal. The area will be smooth, hair-free, and settled.
If you're prone to cold sores, waxing the upper lip can trigger an outbreak. The trauma of pulling hair from the follicle can reactivate the virus in people who carry it. This doesn't mean you can't wax. It means you should have your antiviral medication ready or speak to your pharmacist beforehand if you know you're susceptible. Let Radina know when you book so she's aware.

All tools and equipment are thoroughly cleaned and hygienically prepared between every client. Fresh towels, sanitised surfaces, and a clean workspace are standard for every appointment.
The treatment is one of the quickest services at the salon. You'll be done in a few minutes.
The wax is heated in a professional warmer and applied fresh from the pot for every client. Spatulas and applicators are single-use, the skin is cleaned before and treated after with professional products, and Radina wears gloves throughout. No double-dipping, no reusing materials between clients.
Radina cleans the upper lip area to remove any makeup, oil, or moisturiser. Clean skin allows the wax to grip the hair properly rather than sliding on the surface. She also checks your skin for any sensitivity, breakouts, or irritation that might affect the treatment.
A thin layer of warm Hive professional wax is applied to the upper lip area, following the direction of hair growth. The wax is applied at the right temperature, warm enough to spread smoothly and grip the hair, but not hot enough to burn or irritate sensitive facial skin.
A fabric strip is pressed firmly over the wax and removed quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. This pulls the hair out from the root in one clean motion. Radina works in small sections to ensure complete coverage and clean removal.
A soothing product is applied to calm the skin and reduce any redness. Radina will give you aftercare advice for the next 24 hours to keep your skin settled.
The whole process from start to finish takes around 5 minutes. You can book it on its own or combine it with other treatments in the same appointment.

3 to 6 weeks depending on your hair growth cycle. Most clients see regrowth around the 4 week mark. With regular waxing, the hair grows back finer and sparser over time.
There's a brief pulling sensation when the strip is removed but it's over in a second. Professional wax grips the hair rather than the skin, so it's less painful than at-home wax strips. Most clients describe it as momentarily uncomfortable rather than painful.
No. This is a myth. Waxing removes hair from the root, and over time with regular waxing, the hair follicle weakens. Hair grows back finer, not thicker. Shaving creates blunt ends that feel rough, which is where the myth comes from. Waxing doesn't do this.
Around 5 minutes for the upper lip. The lip and chin combo takes around 10 minutes.
Wait a few hours before applying makeup to the waxed area. Your pores are open after waxing and applying product immediately can cause irritation or spots. After a few hours, carry on as normal.
Both work well. Waxing is slightly faster and removes all hair in one strip. Threading is better for very sensitive skin that reacts to wax. Aesthete Beauty offers both and Radina can recommend based on your skin type.
Avoid retinol and chemical exfoliants for 48 hours before. Don't shave between appointments as the wax needs at least 2 to 3 weeks of growth to grip properly. Come with clean skin if possible.
No. This is the most persistent myth in hair removal and it's not true. Waxing pulls hair from the root. When the hair grows back, the new tip is tapered and soft, not blunt like shaved regrowth. Over time, regular waxing can actually make the hair finer and sparser because repeated pulling weakens the follicle. The "thicker" feeling some people describe is usually just the contrast between smooth skin and the first bit of regrowth coming through.
Not without stopping it first. Retinol thins the skin by speeding up cell turnover. Waxing on retinoid-thinned skin can tear the surface layer, leaving a raw, painful wound. Stop applying retinol to the upper lip area for at least five to seven days before your wax. If you're on oral isotretinoin (Accutane), waxing isn't safe at all while you're taking it. Mention any skincare products or medications on your consultation form.
It can if you carry the cold sore virus (herpes simplex). The physical trauma of waxing can reactivate the virus and cause an outbreak on or near the upper lip. If you know you're prone to cold sores, speak to your pharmacist about taking an antiviral tablet before your appointment. It's not a reason to avoid waxing altogether but it's worth being prepared.
Chemical-free hair removal using cotton thread. Ideal for sensitive skin that reacts to wax.
