If your nails snap every time they get any length, it's not because you've got bad nails. It's because they've got no support.
Most people try nail hardeners, cuticle oils, supplements. Some of it helps a bit. But the reality is, if your natural nails are thin or weak, no topical product is going to turn them into nails that can hold length without breaking. That's just not how it works.
BIAB is a builder gel overlay that goes directly onto your natural nail and gives it the structural support it can't provide on its own. It's not a cosmetic coating like gel polish. It actually reinforces the nail plate so your nails can grow to lengths they'd never reach without it. Thicker than gel polish, thinner than acrylics, and it looks completely natural.
At Aesthete Beauty in Dundee, every BIAB treatment is carried out by Radina Ignatova, a professional nail expert with over 11 years of experience whose work has been featured in Scratch Magazine and Who What Wear UK. The BIAB formula is HEMA-free and low-heat, so there's no burning sensation under the lamp and reduced risk of allergic reactions. BIAB Manicure starts from £49, or from £79 with Russian manicure preparation for the longest possible wear. Book online any time or call us on 01382 217888.
I've been to Aesthete Beauty three times now to get Biab nails done, and I love the excellent job Radina did on my nails each time. Professional, friendly and the best manicure I've had in Dundee. Highly recommended.
BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It's a thicker, brush-on builder gel that creates a structured overlay on top of your natural nail. Think of it this way. Gel polish is like paint on a wall. It makes it look nice, but it doesn't make the wall any stronger. BIAB is more like rendering. It adds a layer of genuine structural support.
It goes on in layers, each one cured under an LED lamp, and the finished result is a nail that feels strong, looks glossy, and can handle everyday life without chipping or snapping. You can leave it in its natural pale pink shade for a classic understated look, or have gel polish applied on top in any colour you want.
There are extra finish options too. French tips, ombre gradients, chrome mirror effects, or full nail art and custom designs. BIAB is the base layer that makes it all possible. The strength underneath, the style on top.
It's not the same as acrylics. It's thinner, more natural looking, and there's no strong chemical smell during application. For most clients who want their nails to look groomed and feel strong without going down the extension route, BIAB is the one to go for.
Your nails can actually grow. This is the main reason people get BIAB. If your nails have always been weak, brittle, or just snap the moment they get any length, BIAB gives them the external support they need. The overlay acts like a protective shell. Your nails grow underneath it, protected from the everyday knocks and stress that would normally cause them to break. Clients who could never get past a certain length find their nails reaching lengths they didn't think were possible.
Infills instead of full removal. This is a big one for nail health. BIAB doesn't need to be completely stripped off and reapplied at every appointment. Instead, fresh product gets added to the regrowth area near the cuticle. That means the nail plate isn't being buffed back to nothing every three weeks. Most clients can go through three or more infill appointments before a full removal and reapplication is needed. It's far healthier for your natural nails long term.
HEMA-free and TPO-free formula. The BIAB products used at Aesthete Beauty are HEMA-free and TPO-free. If you've ever had an allergic reaction to gel in the past, itchy cuticles, redness, swelling, it was likely caused by HEMA. Our formula reduces that risk significantly. If you have any concerns about sensitivity, book a patch test at least 48 hours before your treatment.
No burning under the lamp. The formula is low-heat, so you don't get that sharp burning sensation when your nails are curing that a lot of people associate with builder gels. It's comfortable for the vast majority of nail types. If you've avoided builder gel in the past because of the heat, this is worth trying.
Helps break nail biting. BIAB's thickness makes your nails significantly harder to bite or pick through. And the psychological effect of having nails that actually look good creates motivation to keep them that way. A lot of clients find that once their nails look well-groomed and feel strong, the urge to bite just fades.
Lasts 3-4 weeks standard, 5-6 with Russian manicure prep. With standard preparation, BIAB lasts three to four weeks before an infill is needed. Combine it with Russian manicure preparation and that stretches to five to six weeks. The dry e-file cuticle prep creates such a clean bond that there's nothing for moisture to get under. No lifting, no peeling, no gaps at the cuticle line.
This is one of the most common questions at the salon, and it's fair enough because the differences aren't always obvious from the outside.
Gel polish is a colour coating. It goes on thin, looks great, and lasts about three to four weeks. But it doesn't add any strength to your nail. If your nails are already healthy and you just want colour that doesn't chip, gel polish is perfect. If your nails are weak or breaking, gel polish isn't going to fix that. It's paint, not structure.
BIAB sits in the middle. It's a structural overlay that strengthens your natural nail AND can have colour on top. It's the one to choose if your nails are weak, thin, peeling, or just won't grow. The overlay gives them the support they need to reach lengths they can't manage on their own. You still keep your natural nails underneath. They're growing, protected, getting stronger over time with regular infills.
Nail extensions (polygel or soft gel tips) add actual length beyond the end of your natural nail. If you want long nails right now and don't want to wait for them to grow, extensions are the way to go. They're built on top of your natural nail or attached using soft gel tips. More dramatic, more length, more options for shapes.
Not sure which to book? Radina will talk you through it when you arrive. She'd rather you ask than sit there wondering if you've booked the wrong thing.
If you've had BIAB before and it started lifting or peeling within a few days, the BIAB wasn't the problem. The prep was.
The single biggest mistake is soaking hands in water before application. It's what most salons do because that's how they've always done manicures. But when your nails absorb water, the nail plate swells slightly. Then the BIAB goes on top of a swollen nail. Hours later, the nail dries out and contracts back to its normal size. The BIAB doesn't contract with it. That tiny gap at the edges is where lifting starts.
At Aesthete Beauty, all preparation is done completely dry using an e-file. No water soaking at all. The BIAB bonds to a stable nail surface from the first layer.
Proper BIAB also needs correct apex placement and thorough cuticle preparation. Salons that treat it like thick gel polish, rush through the prep, or don't understand the product properly will get inconsistent results. That's not BIAB failing. That's application failing.
For the best possible result, combine BIAB with Russian manicure preparation. The Russian technique removes all dead cuticle skin with precision, leaving a perfectly clean nail plate for the BIAB to bond to. It's the reason clients who add Russian prep regularly get five to six weeks of wear with zero lifting.
Just had amazing service from Radina today. I love my BIAB french polish nails. I had been going to another competitor chain of salons where Radina was previously employed for a number of years but after she left there, the people who continued doing my nails left them in such poor condition that I was afraid to go anywhere else. They were thin and flaking and sore. It was a relief to find Radina again! Today is the second appointment which I have had with her for my nails in her new salon and I am overjoyed to be able to have nice nails which feel stronger and healthy, once again.
There are two ways BIAB can be applied at Aesthete Beauty, and which one Radina uses depends on your nails and what you're after.
Freehand application is the traditional method. The builder gel is applied directly to the nail and shaped by hand. It works well for natural-looking overlays where you want a subtle, everyday finish.
Dual forms are reusable moulds that fit over the nail. The gel goes inside the form, gets pressed onto the nail, cured under the lamp, then the form is removed. What's left is a perfectly shaped overlay with smooth sidewalls, a clean free edge, and an even apex on every single nail. The finish is consistent, structurally sound, and requires very little filing afterwards, which means less stress on the nail plate.
The result with dual forms is a professionally sculpted overlay that looks flawless from every angle. It's the technique to choose if you want perfect structural symmetry or if you're going for a specific shape that needs precision.
Radina will recommend which method suits your nails best. It depends on your nail shape, the look you want, and how much structure is needed.
The salon maintains a fresh, clean-air environment with no strong chemical smells. Vodex dust extraction runs during all e-file work, pulling nail dust from the air at source so the workspace stays clear. All metal tools are thoroughly cleaned and hygienically prepared between every client. You get fresh disposable files and buffers each time, and Radina wears gloves throughout your nail service.
If you've never had BIAB before, here's exactly what happens.
If you have never visited Aesthete Beauty before, you will complete a brief digital consultation form when you arrive. This covers any allergies, skin sensitivities, nail conditions, and medical history that could affect your treatment. It takes two minutes and helps Radina tailor the service to you.
You'll get a form by email before your appointment. It covers your nail health, any concerns, and checks for anything that might affect the treatment. It means your time in the salon is focused entirely on your nails from the moment you sit down.
Radina will look at your natural nails and assess their condition. If you've got damage from previous salons, thin nails, or anything that needs addressing, she'll talk you through the best approach and what to expect.
Your nails get filed to whatever shape you prefer. Square, round, almond, coffin, whatever you like.
Professional dry e-file prep to clean up the cuticle area and prepare the nail plate. If you've booked Russian manicure as an add-on, this is where the specialist cuticle powder and diamond bit technique comes in for the cleanest possible result.
The builder gel goes on in layers, either freehand or using dual forms depending on what's best for your nails. Each layer is cured under the LED lamp.
Natural pale pink, gel polish in any colour, French tips, chrome, nail art, whatever you've chosen. The colour goes on after the structural overlay is in place.
Cuticle oil every day. Gloves when you're cleaning. Don't pick or peel. Radina will tell you when to book your next appointment based on your nail growth and the condition of the overlay, usually three to four weeks for an infill.
BIAB Manicure starts from £49. BIAB Infills from £49, or from £55 if it's been more than four weeks. BIAB with Russian Manicure starts from £79 for the longest possible wear time.

If you're not sure whether to book BIAB on its own or with Russian manicure, the honest answer is that the Russian prep makes a noticeable difference from the first appointment. It's the single biggest upgrade you can make to the longevity of any BIAB treatment.
If any of these sound familiar, BIAB is worth trying:
BIAB isn't the right choice if you want extreme length right now. For that, nail extensions are the better option. BIAB builds length gradually as your natural nails grow underneath the overlay. If you want immediate length, go for polygel or soft gel tip extensions instead.
If you've never had it before, don't worry about not knowing what to expect. Radina will explain everything and help you choose the right service for your nails.
Nails were in poor condition prior to visiting this salon. I got really informed advice about treatments and how to look after my nails moving forward. So glad I visited. IBX treatment and biab from the lovely Radina. Felt really looked after and she was so friendly. Salon is clean and welcoming and quality products used. Fabulous experience from start to finish. Next 2 visits already booked in.
BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It's a strengthening gel overlay that gets applied to natural nails to provide structural support. It allows nails to grow longer and resist breaking by creating a protective, durable coating that distributes stress across the nail plate. It can be left in a natural pale pink or finished with gel polish in any colour.
With standard preparation, BIAB lasts three to four weeks before an infill is recommended. Clients who combine BIAB with Russian manicure preparation often get five to six weeks of wear depending on lifestyle and how much stress the nails are under. Regular infills every three to four weeks keep the overlay looking fresh and structurally sound.
BIAB Manicure starts from £49. BIAB Infills from £49. BIAB with Russian Manicure from £79. Add-ons include French tips (£5), chrome (from £7), and nail art (from £7). All current pricing is in the online booking system.
No. When applied and removed correctly, BIAB does not damage the natural nail. Damage happens when BIAB gets picked or peeled off, or when the nail plate is over-buffed during preparation or removal. At Aesthete Beauty, all preparation is done properly, removal is soaked off not filed off, and regular infills mean less repeated buffing over time.
This is one of BIAB's biggest advantages. It doesn't need full removal at every appointment. Infills add fresh product to the regrowth area without stripping the entire overlay. Most clients with regular three to four week infills can go through three or more infill appointments before a full removal is needed. That's far healthier for the natural nail than repeated buffing and reapplication.
They serve different purposes. BIAB is a gel overlay that strengthens and protects natural nails with a thinner, more natural look. Acrylics create a harder, thicker structure typically used for extensions or heavy-duty strengthening. BIAB is gentler on the nail, doesn't produce strong chemical smells, and can be maintained with infills. If you want a natural looking, protective overlay, BIAB is the one. If you want maximum length and don't mind a thicker nail, acrylics might suit.
Yes. The thickness of BIAB makes nails significantly harder to bite or pick through. The improved appearance and the investment in having them done properly also creates motivation to preserve them. A lot of clients find that once their nails look good and feel strong, the urge to bite fades naturally.
The products used at Aesthete Beauty are HEMA-free and TPO-free, which reduces the risk of allergic reactions and sensitivity. The formula is also low-heat, so there's no burning sensation under the lamp. If you've had reactions to gel in the past, book a patch test at least 48 hours before your appointment.
Yes, and it's the combination that produces the best result. Russian manicure preparation creates a perfectly clean, dry nail plate with a precise cuticle margin. BIAB then bonds to that surface with nothing in the way. No dead skin, no rough edges, no gaps for moisture. Clients who get both regularly report five to six weeks of solid wear with no lifting. Russian manicure is available as an add-on during booking.
Dual forms are reusable moulds used during BIAB application to create a perfectly symmetrical, structurally consistent overlay. The gel is applied inside the form, pressed onto the nail, cured, and the form is removed. The result is smooth sidewalls, a clean free edge, and a professional finish with minimal filing needed. Radina will recommend whether freehand or dual form application is best for your nails.
I have been getting biab nails since December with Radina. My nails look amazing everytime. Radina really knows her stuff and takes time to make sure my nails are perfect. She has an excellent attention to detail and is very attentive. I really look forward to my visits as Radina is such a lovely person also.
