Gel Polish Pedicure in Dundee

Your toenails take a beating. Closed shoes all day, walking, running, kicking things under your desk. Regular polish on toes doesn't stand a chance. It chips within a week, sometimes faster, and then you're left with patchy colour that looks worse than bare nails.

A gel polish pedicure changes that completely. The formula cures under an LED lamp so it hardens into a durable, glossy finish that lasts four to six weeks on toes. Not four to six days. Weeks. Your toenails look freshly painted from the first day to the last, whether you're in sandals, at the gym, or on holiday.

At Aesthete Beauty in Dundee, every gel polish pedicure is carried out by Radina Ignatova, a professional nail expert with over 11 years of experience whose work has been featured in Scratch Magazine and Who What Wear UK. All gel polish is HEMA-free from Lecente and OPI, so there's reduced risk of allergic reactions. Gel Toes starts from £40. Book online any time or call us on 01382 217888.

The Treatment

What is a Gel Polish Pedicure?

A gel polish pedicure uses the same professional gel formula as a gel manicure, applied to your toenails instead. The polish goes on in thin layers and each one gets cured under an LED lamp. Once it's set, it's set. No smudging when you put your shoes back on, no dents, no waiting for it to dry.

The result is a glossy, chip-free finish that holds up far longer on toes than it does on fingers. There's a biological reason for that. Toenails grow at roughly 1.5 millimetres per month compared to about 3.5 millimetres for fingernails. That slower growth rate means less visible gap at the cuticle line, and the gel stays bonded to a larger proportion of the nail surface for longer. It's why gel on toes regularly lasts four to six weeks. Some clients get even longer.

The other factor is lifestyle. Fingernails take constant abuse from typing, washing up, opening packaging, scrubbing things. Toenails sit inside your shoes and do very little. Less mechanical stress means less chance of the gel lifting or chipping at the edges. The wear time you get on toes is genuinely better than anywhere else on your body.

The appointment includes toenail shaping, professional dry e-file cuticle preparation, and gel polish application with LED curing. Hundreds of colours are available, plus add-on finishes like French tips and nail art.

It's not just for summer either. A lot of clients keep their toes done year round because it feels good knowing they look sorted, whether anyone can see them or not.

The Benefits

Benefits of a Gel Polish Pedicure

Four to six weeks of chip-free colour. This is the main reason people switch from regular polish on their toes. Regular polish might survive a week if you're careful. Gel polish lasts four to six weeks because it's cured under the lamp and chemically bonded to the nail. It doesn't chip, peel, or go patchy. You get your toes done and genuinely forget about them for over a month.

The shine stays. This is what actually converts people. Regular polish starts looking dull and tired within a few days, even if it hasn't chipped. That glossy wet look fades to a flat, chalky finish pretty fast. Gel doesn't do that. The high-gloss finish you walk out with is the same finish you'll have in week five. It's the difference between toes that look freshly painted and toes that look like they were painted three weeks ago.

Survives everything. Swimming, gym, running, walking in the rain, kicking about in trainers all day. Once gel polish is cured, water doesn't affect it. You don't have to worry about it lifting after a shower or fading in the pool. It holds up through whatever your feet go through.

HEMA-free formula. All gel polish at Aesthete Beauty comes from Lecente and OPI. Both are HEMA-free, meaning reduced risk of the allergic reactions that cheaper gel products cause. If you've ever had itchy skin around your toenails after a pedicure elsewhere, it was likely the polish. This formula avoids that.

Instant dry. Shoes straight on. The moment the top coat comes out from under the LED lamp, your toenails are completely set. No toe separators. No flip flops in January. No sitting around for 30 minutes hoping you don't smudge them putting your boots back on. Done is done.

Professional dry preparation. Cuticle preparation is done with a dry e-file, not water soaking. This means the gel bonds to a stable, dry nail surface from the first layer. Better adhesion, longer wear, no premature lifting. It's one of the reasons gel on toes at Aesthete consistently hits that four to six week mark.

The Real Question

Why Gel on Toes When Regular Polish "Lasts Fine"?

This is the most common pushback against gel pedicures, and it's fair.

Regular polish on toes does last longer than on fingers. Some people get two weeks, some get a month. Toenails are tucked away in shoes, they don't bash against keyboards, and they grow slowly enough that you don't notice a gap for ages. So why spend more on gel?

Because chipping isn't the only problem.

Regular polish starts losing its shine within days. Even if it hasn't chipped, it goes flat and dull. That wet, glossy look you walked out of the salon with turns chalky. The colour fades slightly. If you look closely, tiny surface scratches and scuffs appear from your socks rubbing against the polish inside your shoes. It still looks "OK" at two weeks, but it doesn't look fresh.

Gel doesn't have that problem. The cured surface is harder and smoother than regular polish, so it resists those micro-scratches. The gloss stays. You hit week four and your toes still look like you just had them done.

Then there's the drying time. Regular polish takes a proper 30 minutes to fully harden on toes, and even then it's not truly set for hours. One wrong move putting your shoes on and you've got a dent or a smudge on the big toe. Gel cures under the lamp in 60 seconds per coat. Fully hard. Shoes on, walk out, no risk.

The maths works out too. A gel pedicure at £40 lasting six weeks costs about £6.67 per week. A regular polish pedicure at £35 lasting two to three weeks costs £11.67 to £17.50 per week. Gel is the cheaper option spread across actual wear time.

For people who just want a quick colour for one event and don't mind if it looks a bit tired afterwards, regular polish is fine. For everyone else, gel is better value and looks better for longer.

Your Safety

Why HEMA-Free Gel Polish Matters for Your Toes

This is something most people don't think about until they have a reaction.

HEMA (2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is found in most standard gel polishes. It helps the product bond to the nail. The problem is that it's also the most common cause of allergic reactions in gel nail products. Itchy cuticles, red skin around the nail, swelling, sometimes blistering. Once you develop a sensitivity to HEMA, it tends to get worse with each exposure. Some people end up unable to wear gel at all.

On toes, the risk of reaction is the same as on hands. The skin around toenails is just as sensitive. If anything, reactions on feet can be more irritating because they're stuck inside shoes all day with no airflow.

At Aesthete Beauty, all gel polish is HEMA-free. Lecente and OPI both produce professional-grade formulas that bond properly without HEMA. The products are also TPO-free, which means no burning sensation under the lamp and a formula that's already ahead of incoming legislation.

TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) is a photoinitiator used in some gel polishes to help them cure under the lamp. The EU banned it from cosmetics in April 2026 after classifying it as a potential reproductive toxicant. The UK follows with a ban from August 2026. The products at Aesthete Beauty are already TPO-free, so this doesn't affect your pedicure appointments here. But if you're getting gel on your toes elsewhere, it's worth checking what formula they use.

There's also a concern people raise about gel on toes and moisture. The worry is that covering toenails with gel traps moisture underneath, especially in closed shoes during winter, and creates a risk of fungal infection. In reality, properly applied gel with clean prep and no lifting doesn't trap anything. Moisture gets trapped when the gel lifts away from the nail at the edges, creating tiny pockets where bacteria and fungi can grow. That happens when prep is rushed or the nail plate isn't properly dehydrated before application. The dry e-file preparation at Aesthete removes all cuticle debris and dehydrates the nail surface, so the gel bonds flush to the nail with no gaps.

If you've had reactions to gel in the past, or you want to be certain before your first appointment, book a patch test at least 48 hours beforehand. Better to know in advance.

Which One?

Gel Pedicure vs Regular Polish Pedicure

Both options are available at Aesthete Beauty. Here's how they compare.

Regular polish pedicure uses OPI standard polish. It looks great when you walk out. But regular polish on toes usually starts losing its gloss within a few days, and you'll see the first chips within one to two weeks. It air-dries, so you need to wait before putting shoes back on. A regular polish pedicure is a good choice if you want a tidy-up and quick colour for one specific event, or if you'd rather keep things simple and budget-friendly. Starts from £35.

Gel polish pedicure uses HEMA-free Lecente or OPI gel cured under an LED lamp. It lasts four to six weeks without chipping, and the gloss stays the entire time. Your shoes go back on the moment it's cured. Gel is the better choice if you want toes that look freshly done for over a month, if you're heading on holiday and want your feet sorted before you leave, or if you're sick of regular polish looking tired after a week. Starts from £40.

If you're not sure which to go for, gel is the better value for most people. You get your toes done once and forget about them for over a month.

Had a gel manicure, eyebrow threading and tinting. First class experience for all treatments and have booked again. Radina was lovely from start to finish. Would definitely recommend.

Winter Toes

Gel Pedicure in Closed Shoes and Cold Weather

You might have heard that gel polish on toes is "bad" in winter. This comes up online a lot, usually phrased as a warning about wearing gel on toes inside closed shoes during cold months.

The theory goes like this: your feet sweat in boots and thick socks, the moisture gets trapped under the gel, and that creates conditions for fungal growth. It sounds plausible. But it's not quite what happens.

Gel polish sits on top of the nail plate in a thin, sealed layer. If that layer is intact with no lifting at the edges, there's nowhere for moisture to get trapped. The problem only starts when the gel separates from the nail, which creates tiny pockets between the polish and the nail surface. Sweat, shower water, or pool water can seep into those gaps. In a warm, dark environment like the inside of a winter boot, that's where bacteria and fungus could potentially grow.

But lifting doesn't happen randomly. It happens because of poor preparation. If the cuticle area isn't cleaned properly, if there's residual oil or moisture on the nail plate when the gel goes on, or if the base coat doesn't bond cleanly, the gel will start peeling away within a week or two. That's a prep problem, not a gel problem.

At Aesthete Beauty, every gel pedicure starts with dry e-file cuticle preparation. No water soaking. The nail plate is dehydrated and cleaned before the first layer of base coat goes on. This gives the gel a stable, dry surface to bond to, which is why it stays sealed for the full wear time. No lifting, no pockets, no trapped moisture.

Plenty of clients keep their toes done right through autumn and winter. It's one of those quiet confidence things. Nobody else might see them, but you know they look good. And if you end up at a yoga class, a spa day, or a holiday, you're already sorted.

The only real advice for winter is to keep an eye on your toes. If you notice any lifting at the edges before your next appointment, don't leave it. Book a removal or repair rather than waiting for your scheduled appointment. A small lift caught early is a two-minute fix. A lift that's been sitting in a damp boot for three weeks is a different conversation.

Looking After Them

How to Make Your Gel Pedicure Last

Most gel pedicures on toes will last four to six weeks without any special effort. But a few small habits can help you squeeze every last day out of them.

Cuticle oil on your toes. Yes, toes too. A drop of cuticle oil around each toenail before bed keeps the surrounding skin hydrated and flexible. When the skin dries out and tightens, it can pull at the edges of the gel and cause premature lifting. Thirty seconds a day. That's all it takes.

Don't soak in hot water for ages. A normal shower is fine. A quick bath is fine. But sitting in a hot bath for an hour softens the nail plate and can weaken the bond between the gel and the nail. Lukewarm is better if you're a bath person. Same goes for hot tubs and jacuzzis.

Shoes that fit. Tight shoes pressing against your big toenail can push the gel at the tip and cause it to lift or crack at the free edge. If you're wearing pointed shoes or boots that are slightly too small, the constant pressure on the toenails will shorten how long the gel lasts.

Chlorine. Swimming pools are fine for gel toenails, but chlorine does dull the finish over time. If you swim regularly, rinse your feet afterwards. The gel won't come off, but the high-gloss surface can lose a little of its shine with repeated chlorine exposure.

Don't pick at it. When you start seeing growth at the cuticle line and the temptation kicks in to peel the edge, don't. Peeling gel off takes layers of your toenail with it. The nail underneath ends up thin, rough, and prone to splitting. It takes months of growth to recover from that damage. When the gap gets noticeable, book your next appointment. Professional removal soaks it off gently without touching the nail plate.

Skip the nail polish remover at home. Even acetone-free removers can soften the gel surface if you're using them to touch up your hands and accidentally get some on your toes. Keep products away from your gel toenails.

Is It For You?

Is a Gel Polish Pedicure Right for You?

If any of these sound familiar, a gel polish pedicure is what you need:

  • Regular polish on your toes chips within a week or loses its shine within days
  • You want toenails that look freshly done for a month or more, not just "not chipped"
  • You're going on holiday and want your feet sorted before you leave
  • You go to the gym, swim, or do yoga and want toes that hold up without worrying about them
  • You wear open-toe shoes or sandals and want them looking sharp
  • You keep your toes done year-round, even through winter, because it makes you feel put together
  • You've had allergic reactions to gel in the past and want to know the products are HEMA-free and TPO-free
  • You're tired of waiting 30 minutes for polish to dry and then smudging it putting your shoes on

A gel pedicure isn't suitable if you have an active fungal nail infection. That needs treating first. If your toenails have discolouration, thickening, or a crumbly texture, mention it when you arrive. Radina will have a look and advise you on whether gel is appropriate or whether treatment should come first.

If you're not sure whether gel or regular polish is the right call for your toes, Radina will talk it through with you. No pressure, no upselling. She'd rather you get the right service than book the wrong thing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Gel Polish Pedicure in Dundee

Q

How long does a gel pedicure last?

Four to six weeks on average. Toenails grow slower than fingernails and take less daily wear, so gel polish on toes lasts much longer than on hands. Some clients get six weeks or more before the growth gap becomes noticeable enough to book a new appointment.

Q

How much does a gel pedicure cost in Dundee?

Gel Toes starts from £40. Toes Removal is £15. Nail Repair is £6. Add-ons include French tips (£5) and nail art (from £7). Gel Toes and Fingers combo is £75. All current pricing is in the online booking system.

Q

Is gel polish on toes bad for your nails?

No. When applied and removed correctly, gel polish does not damage toenails. Damage only happens when gel gets picked or peeled off, which tears layers from the nail plate. At Aesthete Beauty, gel is always soaked off properly using acetone wraps. The nail stays healthy underneath.

Q

Can I get gel on fingers and toes at the same time?

Yes. The Gel Toes and Fingers combo is £75. Book it as one appointment and get everything done in a single visit.

Q

Is the gel polish HEMA-free?

Yes. Same Lecente and OPI HEMA-free formula used for manicures. Also TPO-free and low-heat, so no burning sensation under the lamp and reduced risk of allergic reactions.

Q

How is gel polish removed from toes?

Soaked off using acetone wraps, same as on hands. The gel softens and gets gently removed without scraping or buffing the toenail. It takes a bit longer than just wiping off regular polish, but it keeps the nail healthy. Never pick or peel it off yourself.

Q

Can I add French tips or nail art to my toes?

Yes. French tips (£5) and nail art (from £7) are available as add-ons. Classic French on toes is popular, and a lot of clients go for a simple accent design on the big toes.

Q

Do I need to bring flip flops?

No. Gel polish is fully cured under the LED lamp, so it's completely set before you leave. You can put your shoes and socks back on straight away with zero risk of smudging.

Q

Can I wear closed shoes with gel on my toes?

Absolutely. Gel pedicures are designed to hold up inside shoes. Boots, trainers, heels, whatever you wear. The gel is cured hard and doesn't dent or smudge from contact with socks or shoe linings. Just make sure your shoes fit properly, as constant pressure from tight footwear can cause lifting at the tip of the nail.

Q

Is gel on toes bad in winter?

No. The concern about moisture getting trapped under gel in closed shoes during winter only applies if the gel has lifted away from the nail. Properly applied gel with clean prep stays sealed to the nail surface. At Aesthete Beauty, dry e-file preparation creates a strong bond with no gaps. Plenty of clients keep their toes done year-round.

Q

How often should I get a gel pedicure?

Every four to six weeks is typical. Toenails grow slowly, so the gap at the cuticle takes longer to become visible than on fingernails. Some clients stretch to seven or eight weeks if the growth doesn't bother them. Radina will let you know if the previous gel needs removing before a new set goes on.

Q

Can I leave gel polish on my toes for two months?

Technically, gel on toes can stay intact for that long because toenails grow so slowly. But it's not recommended. After six to eight weeks, the growth gap at the cuticle exposes bare nail that can snag or catch. There's also a higher chance of the gel lifting at the edges after extended wear. Book a removal and fresh set every four to six weeks to keep everything healthy and looking sharp.

Q

What happens if the gel starts lifting on my toes?

Book a repair or removal appointment rather than leaving it. A small lift is a quick fix. But if moisture gets into the gap between the gel and the nail, it can cause discolouration or, in rare cases, infection. Don't try to glue it down at home and don't peel the rest off. Come in and have it dealt with properly.

Q

What is the TPO ban and does it affect my pedicure?

TPO is a chemical used in some gel polishes to help them cure under the lamp. The EU banned it in April 2026 after classifying it as a potential reproductive toxicant, and the UK ban takes effect in August 2026. The gel polish at Aesthete Beauty is already TPO-free, so your pedicure appointments are not affected. If you're getting gel done elsewhere, it's worth asking what products they use.

Q

Do I need to take breaks from gel on my toes?

Not necessarily. If the gel is applied and removed correctly each time, your toenails can handle regular gel pedicures without breaks. Damage comes from improper removal, not from the product itself. If you notice your toenails becoming thin or weak, a break with daily cuticle oil can help them recover. Radina will let you know if she thinks your nails need a rest.

Q

Is a gel pedicure safe during pregnancy?

Most people continue to get gel pedicures throughout pregnancy without any issues. The main consideration is ventilation, which is why the Vodex dust extraction in the salon matters. All products used are HEMA-free. If you have specific medical concerns, check with your midwife first. Radina will also review your digital consultation form before the appointment to flag anything that needs attention.

Q

Can I wear socks and closed shoes straight after a gel pedicure?

Yes. The gel's fully cured under the LED lamp during the appointment so it's completely hard when you leave. There's no drying time and nothing to smudge. You can put your socks and shoes back on immediately and go about your day.

The service was 10/10, I absolutely love my nails, Radina is very friendly. This was my second appointment with her and I will definitely be back.
